If anything, the yearly oversights made winning Hardcore Performer of the Year that much more gratifying for Kei, who posted photographs of her trophy surrounded by roses on Instagram.
"I don't need awards and trophies to validate me," Kei told PornCrush, "because I believe I'm multi-faceted in my life and in my career. At the same time, it's great to be recognized for my hard work. Especially among my peers and industry people."
Kei, 30, said capturing a trophy at the TEAs hits different.
"Winning at the TEAs is special," Kei said, "because the judges at AVN and XBIZ aren't necessarily fans of trans porn. I feel confident in knowing that at the TEA awards, the panel is familiar with our work. So winning through the TEAs is the most validating award you can receive. It's so fucking major."
Kei grew up just south of Orlando, Florida, but moved to Fort Lauderdale when she turned 18 because she "wanted to be around queer people." She worked as a makeup artist and did camming on the side—when she was still a crossdresser—before jumping into studio porn after transitioning at age 22.
Like so many others, Kei was given her start by Grooby, the AVN Hall of Famer who has done more than anyone in history to elevate trans performers. Grooby was immediately smitten by Kei and began featuring her on all of his production banners, quickly enhancing her brand and helping her land opportunities with other studios throughout the industry.
"She's kinda grown up with us—a true Grooby baby!" Grooby said. "I love seeing good things happen to good people. She's one of the few girls I can go have a beer with and hang out with."
Kei has shot more than 250 scenes since her debut in 2018, with more than 150 of those coming in the past three years. Some of her best work has come for Adult Time, where Kei has had multiple opportunities to show a set of acting skills that are among the best in the business, in any genre. Notable scenes include 2023's "Off the Record" (alongside Aiden Ashley) and 2024's "Wrong Room Right" (with Aria Valencia), both of which garnered AVN nominations.
Kei's ability to flourish in dialogue-driven roles—along with her ability to both top and bottom—make her one of the most versatile trans performers in porn. Colleagues such as Khloe Kay often marvel at her skill set.
"Kasey is so well-rounded; she can perform in any genre," Kay said. "Not to speak down on anyone, but we've never seen a performer as talented as her."
And the cherry on top, Kay said, is Kei's drive and passion for her job.
"She thrives on working," Kay said. "I'm telling you, the bitch wants to work. She's always looking for the next thing. She wants to show the world her talents."
Kay and Kei are more than just colleagues and occasional scene partners. They are also best friends, so it was fitting that Grooby asked Kay to be the presenter for Kei's Hardcore Performer of the Year award.
Even if it may have tipped Kei off.
"When I saw that Khloe was gonna be presenting, I sensed it," Kei said. "I was like, 'Holy shit, if she doesn't give it to me, there's going to be a riot.'"
Kei laughed.
"It was beautiful to have her give it to me, though. It made it that much more special. It was all pretty surreal. I had slight tremors. I was like, 'Wow! After all this time, doing porn and seeing my growth and having it finally acknowledged … I'm so blessed."
As proud as Kei is of the award, it pales in comparison to what the industry has given her overall.
"I feel like this past year, my big goal was to build community," Kei said. "That's the one thing I've been missing in my life. Hosting dinner parties, hosting game nights, and inviting people to come over. Now I'm going to have bi-annual vacations. I've got lots of stuff planned."
And those plans include maintaining a consistent stream of studio shoots and other projects. So, no ... reaching the top of the porn pedestal won't make Kei complacent. If anything, it will fuel her even more.
"I want to keep doing me," she said. "I want to keep striving for excellence. This is not the last you've seen of Kasey Kei. ""
